The Society encourages moves to set up national or regional branches. The following are examples of active brances of the Society.
Japan Branch
The Japanese Society for Carotenoid Research has been renewed for five years and has been publishing the journal "CAROTENOID SCIENCE." Volume 5 of the Journal was published in April, 2002. The 15th Annual Meeting on Carotenoid Research was held in Toyama from 7-9 September 2001. The 16th Annual Meeting will be held in Miyazaki 13-14 September 2002. The committee consists of Masayoshi Ito, Hideki Hashimoto, Michiaki Murakoshi and Wataru Miki. (Text updated August, 2002.)
CARIG
At its meeting in April, 1997 the U. S. Carotenoid Research Interactive Group (CARIG) voted to associate with The International Carotenoid Society. Members of CARIG were offered membership of The International Society until 1999. Phyllis Bowen represents CARIG on the committee of The International Society.
SAARC
Umesh Goswami of Gauhati University, India, is communicating with workers in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka (the SAARC countires: South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation) and coordinating discussions to set up a SAARC Branch of The Society.
Other Localities
In other countries or regions it may be worthwhile to have local correspondents or representatives to facilitate communications in that area. This is under consideration.
