At the 16th International Symposium on Carotenoids in Krakow, Poland, July 17 – 22, 2011, the following awards were presented to outstanding carotenoid scientists who have made significant contributions to the carotenoid field.
NORMAN I. KRINSKY AWARD. .jpg)
Professor John W. Erdman, Jr., Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois, USA, was the recipient of the Norman I. Krinsky award for a lifetime of achievement in research on carotenoid nutrition and dedicated service to the carotenoid field. Professor Erdman is one of the leading carotenoid scientists in the World who has extensively researched and published on biological effects of carotenoids and vitamin A in humans and animals. His research interest is in the area of nutritional and physiological biochemistry of humans and animals; soy protein and lipid metabolism; bioavailability of nutrients in foods; phytochemicals and cancer; he has published in excess of 170 articles in peer-reviewed high impact scientific journals. Professor Erdman has served as chair and vice chair on numerous committees of the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and has been selected as lifetime Associate of the NAS.
OTTO ISLER AWARD
Professor Johan Lugtenburg, Leiden Institute of Chemistry, Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands, was the recipient of the Otto Isler award for a lifetime of achievement in research on carotenoid chemistry and of dedicated service to the carotenoid field. Professor Lugtenburg is the only carotenoid chemist in the entire World who has developed creative and viable methodologies for the total synthesis of highly enriched and fully labeled 13C-cartenoids and 13C-retinoids. He has published in excess of 450 articles in peer-reviewed high impact scientific journals, many of which have focused on the synthesis and metabolism of carotenoids and retinoids in humans, plants, and various biological systems. Professor Lugtenburg hosted the 11th International Symposium on Carotenoids in Leiden, The Netherlands, August 18-23, 1996. Professor Lugtenburg has been knighted by Queen Bearix of the Netherlands for his scientific accomplishments.
